NDA Wins Rajya Sabha Elections Crosses Majority Mark, No Longer Difficult to Pass Bills (Insta@NarendraModi)
New Delhi: In the elections held for 37 Rajya Sabha seats, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) took the lead and won 22 seats. With this, its position in the upper house has become stronger, while the opposition remained limited to 15 seats. Out of the 11 seats for which voting was held, NDA won 9, while 26 seats were already decided unopposed.
NDA's dominance was clearly visible in the election results in many states. Six out of seven seats in Maharashtra went to its account. The alliance also won all five seats in Bihar and all three seats in Assam. Three out of four seats were captured in Odisha, while NDA made its presence felt in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal also. The contest was close in Haryana and Chhattisgarh, but here also the alliance was successful in winning one seat each.
After these results, the mathematics of Rajya Sabha seems to be changing. NDA has now reached close to a clear majority. BJP was already in a strong position as the largest party and now its numbers have increased further with the addition of allies. This may make it easier for the government to pass the bill than before.
These results were not very encouraging for the opposition but remain an important relief for the Congress. The party has been successful in retaining the post of leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha. This will maintain its formal role within the Parliament, even if its numerical strength is reduced.
The effect of increased power in Rajya Sabha may be clearly visible in the times to come. Especially the bill related to giving 33 percent reservation to women is included in the priorities of the government. Different options are being considered to implement it soon.
There are indications that the government may try to take the opposition along on big bills. However, due to strength in numbers, his confidence has also increased. After the start of the tenure of the new members, the equations in the parliament will become clearer, due to which the political picture is going to be interesting in the coming sessions.
